Quick answer for Hong Kong parents

In Hong Kong, ABRSM Practical Grades are face-to-face exams. For viola, this is the live exam route with pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight-reading, and aural tests.

ABRSM Performance Grades are digital exams. For viola, this means recording and submitting a continuous four-piece programme. It is not a live video-call version of the Practical Grade.

As of 11 June 2026, HKEAA lists three 2026 face-to-face Practical Grade sessions in Hong Kong: March to April, August to September, and October to November. The March to April and August to September booking periods have already closed. How ABRSM booking works

For most Hong Kong ABRSM Practical Grade instrumental exams, applicants register and pay through the ABRSM online booking service. Choral Singing and Ensembles are exceptions handled through HKEAA’s own route, but that does not usually affect a viola candidate.

Practical or Performance Grade: should fees decide?

Fees matter, especially for families with more than one child learning music. But I would be careful about choosing the digital route only because it is cheaper and more flexible.

The live Practical Grade is more expensive because it is a face-to-face exam session, but it also tests a wider set of skills: pieces, technical work, sight-reading, and aural tests. For many viola students, especially those who need stronger reading, intonation structure, and exam-room response, that fuller test can be musically useful.

The Performance Grade can suit a student who is ready to present a mature four-piece programme and who plays more naturally when the performance can be recorded in a familiar space. Booking timeline for a calm exam

Three to six months before the target exam, agree on the route and grade with the teacher. Check whether the student is genuinely ready musically, not only whether the next session is convenient.

Two to three months before booking, choose the pieces and confirm any accompaniment needs. For Grade 6 to 8, check the Grade 5 theory or accepted prerequisite early.

During the booking window, do not leave payment until the final evening. Online accounts, card verification, international transaction settings, and family schedules all have a way of becoming annoying at exactly the wrong time.

After booking, check the ABRSM account and email regularly.
